7 Skincare Commandments I Should Have Followed In My Twenties

As a woman in my mid thirties, I wish I could have done things a little differently with my skincare in my twenties. The twenties are the time where your skin’s collagen is still pumping, and you can prevent so many things (except for these pesky chin hairs, not sure what happened, but once I turned 30, I became Paul Bunyan, LOL). So I decided to write on what I would have done differently if I knew then, what I know now.

1)Thou Shall Use An SPF:Why do so many of my fellow brown girls think they can get away with not using SPF? Use it please! Just because your skin looks amazing now, doesn’t mean you won’t pay for it later. I love this one Clarins Sunscreen For Face Wrinkle Control Cream SPF 50 $35 because it goes on super clear, and it contains nourishing ingredients like aloe vera and kiwi. Want a drugstore version? Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch SPF 30 $10.99 is a good option.

2) Thou Shall Use Vitamin C: During your twenties, you should be taking steps to prevent wrinkles because once they are there, you can’t get rid of them (well except with botox!). Vitamin C is one of my fave ingredients because it builds skin plumping collagen. A few of my favorites include: Youth Corridor By Dr. Imber $195, Urban Skin RX Super C Brightening serum $58, Drunk Elephant C Firma Day Serum $80, Philosophy Turbo Booster C Powder $39, Looking for a drugstore version? The No. 7 Youthful Vitamin C Fresh Radiance Essence $24.99 just hit my desk and I’m looking forward to trying it. Remember to always store your vitamin C in a dark place because it is very unstable and can become ineffective quick.

3)Thou Shall Not Stress Over Stuff: Stress is something that I used to do a lot in my twenties and even in my early thirties, but guess what? Stress ages you big time! So adopt my motto (Celeb makeup artist Mally Roncal actually told me this years ago!) if it’s not going to matter in 5 years, don’t spend more than 5 minutes thinking about it. When going through a stressful situation or a breakup, I highly suggest reading a great self-help book. One I just read was by Louise Hay called You Can Heal Your Life $9.29 . It really does help. Also, get yourself a diffusor. I’m obsessed with this one by Art Naturals $39 because it has bluetooth, so I throw on a Sade song, put some lavender in it, and the scent and music just calm me down. Life is too short to spend it stressed and unhappy.

4)Thou Shall Use Self Tanner: Remember when I said use SPF, I meant it! Lots of people tell me they don’t like using SPF because it stops them from getting tanned in the sun. As someone who would use globs of oil all over my body, and bake out by the pool, I now see the skin damage a lot later on. If you must get a tan, then use my absolute favorite self tanner St Tropez Self Tan Classic Mousse $32. It doesn’t smell at all and leaves the most natural looking bronze glow ever.

5)Thou Shall Sleep on Silk Or Satin:-Cotton will literally suck the moisture out of your skin and leave lines on your face that can eventually turn into wrinkles. Invest in a satin or silk pillow case. There are a lot of beauty brands coming out with silk pillow cases and charging an arm and a leg for them. Don’t fall for the hype. Get a silk pillowcase on Ebay or on overstock and save your coins.

6) Thou Shall Use a light Gadget: I’ve become addicted to these at home beauty gadgets. When I was in my 20’s they really didn’t exist. But now, you can invest in a red light gadget. Red light is great because it’s proven to build collagen. Try Dr. Dennis Gross SpectraLight Pro LED Device $159.

7) Thou Shall Use Eye Cream: So important. The under eye area is the first place you see wrinkles. You don’t have many oil glands in that area, so you want to make sure that you are keeping it hydrated. I love this one by an amazing dermatologist Dr .Leyda Bowes. I worked with her a lot when I was the senior beauty editor at Cosmo For Latinas. She really knew skin! Her eye cream is loaded with anti-aging retinol, hyularonic acid, green tea, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. Find out more about her Eye Repair Cream $78 here. If you’re more concerned about puffiness, the Nyakio Quinoa Depuffing & Firming Eye Cream $39 has a cold silicone tip, caffeine, Shea butter, and other ingredients that will knock that puff right out.
